About our club

History

The Hagley Tramping Club was originally formed in 1974 by staff at Christchurch Hospital and until 2007 was known as the Hospital Tramping Club. The club was not restricted to Hospital Staff, but open to all members of the public. Over the decades the membership gradually drifted away from Hospital staff until, by 2006, the link was lost and we no longer had any club members who worked at the Hospital.In 2007 the club’s name changed to the Hagley Tramping Club (after our meeting point near Hagley Park) to better reflect the current membership and promote the club as being open to all.

About Us

About our members

We are one of Christchurch's smallest clubs with around 40 members. Typical numbers on our tramps are around 4 to 8 although our most popular tramps (such as our annual midwinter Christmas trip) generally attract around 12 to 15 trampers.

The club membership is split evenly between male and female, while our members range in age from their 30’s to 80’s. the majority of trampers are in their 40‘s to 60’s.

About our Tramps

The club runs a tramp every weekend (except over Christmas). This may be a day, overnight or multiday tramp, a base camp or the occasional bike ride. For more information see the About our Tramps page

Information for Prospective Members

We encourage prospective new members to experience 2 or 3 trips with us before joining the club. Please phone a member of the committee or e-mail us to for more information about our trips. If you wish, simply find a tramp in the current Newsletter that interests you and contact the leader. Please note all non-members need to book in for all trips so that the leader can assess whether the tramp is suitable for you.

Membership Costs

Our annual membership subscription is $25 single or $30 family Our financial year commences 1st April however discounts will be given to new members who join after August.

Meetings and Social Events

Meetings are generally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month and are relaxed and friendly.

FMC Benefits

The Hagley Tramping club is affiliated to Federated Mountain Clubs (FMC) which confers a number of benefits and discounts for our members.

Safety

The club owns 2 Personel Locator Beacons (PLB's), one of which is carried on all club Tramps.
